For the past several months, I have been looking for a site for my jazz club. Actually, I have been doing research and looking at buildings for about 10 years, but think this is something I need to do within the next year. It's a major undertaking, but we don't have a jazz club in Toledo right now. That feels strange to me because there has always been one the entire time I have lived here since 1969. Will keep you posted.

I know it's been a while folks, but I finally settled on a title for my cd that I recorded with Johnny a couple of years ago. We took a photo while I was in New York that I think is perfect for the cover. The album is called "I Love Bein' Here With You".

Took my first trip to NY city in August. We arrived, rested, then took the train to Lincoln Center to go to Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. Had the opportunity to sing there with good friend Johnny O'Neal and met several singers who were extremely kind and gracious, Briana Thomas, Marianne Solivan, Daralyn Jay, Nancy Harms.

Friday night we took the train to Lenox & 125 so I could do a short gig at the Lenox Lounge with drummer Greg Bandy, another good friend who is from Cleveland. Greg has been known for years at the "Mayor" of Harlem even though he is not in politics (lol).

Saturday night I sang a couple tunes at Smoke.

Sunday I watched the Singers Set from Small's Jazz Club that is streamed to the internet. We then took the train to Small's where I also had the opportunity to sing for the patrons there during Johnny's show.

All in all, had a great time and kept my Facebook friends posted about my activities. It was great, and I noticed when I returned home and went online to FB, I had quite a few friend requests from people I had just met in NY. It's true you are the city that never sleeps. Thank God for my 5-Hour Energy Drinks.

Along with being a jazz legend, singer in his own right and educator, Claude is loved by singers for his wonderfully cool temperament and ability to accompany the newbies and the vets. He has worked with Aretha Franklin and Dakota Staton, among others. All the cats know with him at the piano on a gig, all is well. We want to give him a break Sunday 6-24-12 and show him he is loved by all of us, musicians singers alike. If he feels like playing, that would be a special treat, but the day belongs to him. The core group that will start things off is Sean Dobbins (d), Josh Silver (p) and Joel Hazard (b). Please join us from 3 - 7 p.m. at 151 On The River, formerly Murphy's Place Jazz Club. Special thanks to 151 owner Mike Scott for opening on a Sunday afternoon for this event. Anyone interested in performing should email me @ songstylist@aol.com or send text to 419 297-9856.

Press Release

Area jazz artists gather for photo shoot

“Countless jazz performers continuously dedicate their souls in an effort to keep vintage jazz alive. They are the true heroes who consistently reinforce the importance of jazz as they perform within communities throughout this nation. Their appreciation and commitment have enabled us to keep vintage jazz a part of American culture and a mainstay in today’s contemporary music environment.” They are the Jazzkeepers, asdefined by Cleveland jazz promoter Greg L. Reese in his book “JazzKeepers, A Pictorial Tribute & Memoir”

Toledo’s JazzKeepers will gather on the steps of the Toledo Museum of Art Sunday, August 29, 2010 @ 2:00 p.m. Joining them will be some of their peers from the area’s jazz corridor – Bowling Green, Ann Arbor, Toledo, Detroit and Cleveland. Those who are known by other JazzKeepers to fit the description given above are invited to join us for this history-making event.

There will be a master photo taken of everyone, then small group shots of singers, bassists, pianists/keyboardists, horn players, drummers, etc. Artists may bring their instruments to use as a prop or to play later at the after-set @ Pam's Corner, 116-10th Street. Award-winning photographer Grover Cummings is the official photograher for this will conduct the shoot.

Immediately following the photo shoot, participants will stop by Pam’s Corner at 116-10th St. in downtown Toledo to network and maybe even play a tune or two. It will be a great reunion!

We will again be gathering on the steps of the Toledo Museum of Art to document who makes up the current performing jazz community in Toledo. We are especially focusing on those who are "Jazzkeepers" - those who struggle to keep vintage jazz alive. Even though they may play other types of music, they are known in the local jazz inner circle to respect jazz and not consider it "old" music. Jazz is important because it's part of America's musical history and cannot be forgotten.

Johnny and I recorded a cd in front of a few fans and friends on Sunday 3-21-10 at Audio Matrix Studios. Everything went very well. I regret I couldn't open the session up to everyone like I normally do when I have an even, but, there were space limitations that would not allow it. We're now ready to mix and master. This cd is something different for both Johnny and me because there is no rhythm section - just piano and vocals.

I was asked to sing the national anthem October 16, 2009 to kick off the Walleye festivies weekend. This was great, and I remembered the words (smile).
Last night the the Art Tatum Resource Center Advisory Boar, the Tatum Society, the Toledo Lucas County Public Library hosted a 100th celebration for the jazz legend. It was great! We had a very good turnout, and people seemed to enjoy the various events that took place throughout the evening. We had a diamond raffle, contest to guess how many kisses were in the glass, Our special guest was pianist/vocalist/actor Johnny O'Neal who performed solo and then with his trio. Johnny showed everyone why Oscar Peterson recommend him for the role of Art Tatum in the movie "Ray". He was wonderful! I was thrilled to be asked by him to sing "For All We Know", which received a very positive reception from the audience.
The grand opening weekend of the new Lucas County Area October 3 & 4 2009 featured four or five bands - my group, C. J. Manning & Company, East River Drive and a couple others. However, I was the first to sing at the new arena. We had a sound check because we were first, but the sound was good throughout the day for the other bands. We only had one glitch when my mic went out, but I moved over to the next mic w/no problem. Photos taken of us are wonderful and will be posted here on my site and on my Facebook page. My band was Mike Lorenz on piano, Jerry Powell on drums and Jesse Coleman on sax. It was a great event, and we were honored to be a part of it.

Read in the free press last week that John Colbert, co-owner of Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit is having trouble. He says he only has enough money to keep going for a couple of months. It would be a shame to lose Baker's which has been in existence since 1934. John hopes someone will purchase the club and keep this historic jazz venue. I was booked to work with Allan Barnes at Baker's on April 18th, but the date was moved. I already have a gig on the new date, so I can't be there. Let's all pray that Baker's survives because it needs to. We can't lose any more jazz venues, especially this one.

What can I say? It was fabulous! We drove, stayed at a hotel in Woodbridge Virginia (never got caught in traffic backups), met great people, rode the train, appeared in audience shots on MSNBC Monday night before the big event, walked for miles, visited all the landmarks. Look forward to his next inauguration (smile).

Congratulations to Detroit vocalist Robert McArther on the release of his new CD "That's Me". It's a great CD with songs you don't hear much as well as two original tunes by Detroit songwriters. Check it out at cdbaby.com. I guarantee you'll love it.

My children gave me a birthday at Murphy's last night. It was great!! I saw many old friends, and enjoyed my brothers, sisters, uncle, cousins, and a brother whom I had never met. He's almost 50. We partied in the back room at Murphy's, which is perfect for a party. Even though I was the birthday girl, I was working, and had a little help from my friends. Two of my sons sang, Chris H sang "Them there Eyes", Jamal proposed to Alicia, my uncle helped me sing "You Send Me", I sand "Happy Birthday" to him because his birthday is the same day as mine, excepet he is 73 now. The place was packed and most people stayed until the end.
Oh, what a night!

Rusty was laid to rest in Marion, Ohio Wednesday, October 15, 2008. There was no funeral service, just a private burial for the family. The family requested that no flowers or cards be sent, but some of the girls - Suzanne, Carol and Joyce - went down Thursday and put beautiful flowers on Rusty's final resting place. We will, of course, have a memorial to our wonderful friend who showed so much love and respect to local musicians. She was a class act who truly understood how important her customers were when they passed through the doors of Rusty's Jazz Cafe. To those of us who performed there, it was home.
Details regarding a memorial for my mentor and friend will be forthcoming.

It was great to see Jan Cook and other members of the family at Murphy's last night. Jan and Suzanne, Jimmy's daughter, were wearing these wonderful black t-shirts with a photo of Jimmy holding his trumpet. You'll love it!
If you want to own one of these, call Jan at 419 531-3815. The cost is $25 each, with proceeds supporting the Jimmy Cook Scholarship Fund. Be a true JazzKeeper and support the efforts of the Cook family to assist young people pursuing careers in music with this wonderful tribute to Jimmy.

The picnic was nice although the guest of honor was not able to attend. I spoke to her on Monday of this week, and she sounded wonderful. Her voice was strong, and she said she felt better than she had in a long time.
We had a good conversation reflecting on times gone by but talked about the future for jazz in Toledo. I assured her that we, the JazzKeepers, will do what we can to remain a cohesive and productive community.

The benefit for Maryann Russo at the Rouge Bistro
on Sunday, June 29, 2008 was an unqualified success!
There was standing room only, and all the jazz community came out to support this event. It was great to see folks we don't see much of these days: pianists John Mast, Jim Bishop, Fred Kopp and Preston Keys, native Toledoan (now New Yorker) Lucas Madrazo, who was among the many young people who showed they definitely have the skills to carry the banner. Special kudos to pianist/musician extraordinnaire Glen Tucker and bassist Jordan Shug from Ann Arbor. They pretty much held down the bandstand all night long with drummer Bob Rex. Singer Zoe Young and the young ladies from the Toledo School for the Arts showed up and showed out!
Thanks to singers Nancy Hattner, Jean Holden, Kim Buehler, Vickie Brooks, Kelly Broadway, Lori LeFevre-Johnson, DamenCook and LIsa Young. The piano got a workout from jazz vets Lisa Holden and Jim Gottron.
Drummers Andre Wright Damen Cook swung like crazy and Sixth Edition (Kevin Eikum, John Johnson, Kim Buehler, Lisa Young and Lori LeFevre-Johnson) started the evening off with their beautiful and creative harmonies. If I have left out anyone out, it's because I have memory issues. Thank you all for making this such a wonderful event. Maryann said she was overwhelmed and honored. The mayor sent a proclamation from the City of Toledo, which was a very nice touch, and Maryann and her family we very happy that Maryann's career has received this kind of recognition.
We raised over $4,000 to establish the music scholarship in Maryann's name at The Toledo School for the Arts. More about that later.

Sunday, July 20, 2008 is the date for the 4th annual Rusty's Jazz Reunion Picnic at Toledo Botanical Garden in Toledo, Ohio. The event will run from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. If you are planning to attend, there will be no community table this year, but you can bring your picnic basket and share with others at the picnic. Please remember that no alcoholic beverages are allowed. We are expecting to have many musical guests, but there is a tentative schedule that includes Rusty's Big Band, Mie Whitty, Kelly Broadway, Eric Brazier, Tommy Gearheart, Sixth Edition, Box Rex Trio,
Andre Wright, Gene Parker, Damen Cook, and yours truly. Others who have personally told me they will stop by are pianist/vocalist Johnny O'Neal and former Toledoan bassist extraordinnaire Ray Parker.
Drummers Bob Rex and Andre Wright are heading up the music committee
this year. I love it!! I'll actually get a chance to sit back and relax and enjoy the picnic. Thanks to the other committee members - Carol Licata, Suzanne Carroll (Witherell), Michelle Ellis, Vicky Brooks, Mike Whitty, Joyce Banoura, and, of course, Margaret "Rusty" Monroe. See you there.
